Dendrochronology:

Learn from the trees

All four trees labeled and shown at their location on the property

Tree #2

Tree #1

Tree #3

Tree #4

Tree #1

Steve standing beside the first tree before drawing an increment bore.
Tape measure wrapped around the first tree showing that the tree measures 33.3 inches.

Measuring 33.3”

Where it all starts

In order to accurately determine the age of the tree this instrument is used to drill a hole through the center portion of the tree and a 1/8” core from the bark to the center of the tree is removed showing the growth rings and age of the tree.

Tree #2

Steve removing the 2nd bore from the increment bore core remover.
Tree #2 tape measure alongside increment bore.
Tape measure wrapped around the tree showing the the tree's measurement to be 42.7 inches.

Measure Circumference

DBH = Diameter At Breast Height

Increment Bore

Coring #1

Age the tree

Counting and marking the growth rings.

2nd Bore

For accuracy a second coring is done.

Tree age estimation

150-155 years old

Tree #4

Tape measure wrapped around tree #4 showing the tree diameter to be 39.3 inches.

Revealed our best core yet.

Steve using a magnifying glass to count the growth rings on the first increment bore and marking every ten with a marker.
Close up comparison of two increment bores.

Increment Bore

Center was hit first time.

Count the growth rings

Remained in tact.

2nd Bore

Growth rings very visible all the way through to the center.

Compare cores

Most accurate core of all four trees.
